1️⃣ Basic Tamil Sentence Structure: SOV Pattern
In Tamil, sentences generally follow this order:
Subject + Object + Verb (SOV)
Let’s compare with English:

| “I eat rice.” | நான் சாதம் சாப்பிடுகிறேன். (nAn sAtham sAppiDugiREn) |
| “She reads a book.” | அவள் புத்தகம் வாசிக்கிறாள். (avaL puththagam vAsikkiRAl) |
| “They watch TV.” | அவர்கள் தொலைக்காட்சியை பார்க்கிறார்கள். (avarkaL tolaikkAtchiyai pArkkiRArgaL) |
💡 Key Rule:
Tamil verbs always come at the end of the sentence.
2️⃣ Expanding Sentences with Adjectives & Adverbs
We can make sentences richer by adding:
1️⃣ Adjectives (விசேஷணம்) – Describe nouns.
2️⃣ Adverbs (வினையெச்சம்) – Describe actions.
📌 Example: Using Adjectives
✅ “She bought a beautiful saree.” →
அவள் அழகான புடவை வாங்கினாள். (avaL azhagAna puDavai vAnginAL)
✅ “The small dog is running.” →
சிறிய நாய் ஓடுகிறது. (siRiya nAi OdugiRathu)
📌 Example: Using Adverbs
✅ “He speaks Tamil fluently.” →
அவன் தமிழை தெளிவாக பேசுகிறான். (avan tamizh thEliwAga pEsugiRAn)
✅ “They eat quickly.” →
அவர்கள் விரைவாக சாப்பிடுகிறார்கள். (avarkaL viraivAga sAppiDugiRArgaL)
3️⃣ Joining Sentences with Conjunctions (இணைச்சொற்கள்)
Tamil uses conjunctions to connect ideas smoothly.
📌 Common Tamil Conjunctions

| Because | ஏனெனில் (yAnenil) | நான் வீட்டில் இருந்தேன், ஏனெனில் மழை பெய்தது. (I stayed home because it rained.) |
| If | என்றால் (enRAl) | நீ படிக்கின்றால், நீ தேர்ச்சி பெறுவாய். (If you study, you will pass.) |
| Although | இருந்தாலும் (irundAlum) | அவன் பயந்தாலும், பேசினான். (Although he was afraid, he spoke.) |
4️⃣ Forming Complex Tamil Sentences
Now, let’s put everything together and build more natural, detailed Tamil sentences.
📌 Examples
✅ Simple Sentence:
“I drink tea.” → நான் தேநீர் குடிக்கிறேன். (nAn thEnIr kuDikkiREn)
✅ Expanded Sentence with Adjectives:
“I drink hot tea.” → நான் சூடான தேநீர் குடிக்கிறேன். (nAn sUDAna thEnIr kuDikkiREn)
✅ Using a Conjunction:
“I drink tea because I am tired.” → நான் சோர்வாக இருப்பதால் தேநீர் குடிக்கிறேன். (nAn sOrvAga iruppathAl thEnIr kuDikkiREn)
✅ A More Complex Sentence:
“Even though I was tired, I studied because I had an exam.” →
நான் சோர்வாக இருந்தாலும், தேர்வு இருந்ததால் படித்தேன்.
(nAn sOrvAga irundAlum, tErvu irundathAl paDiththEn)

✅ Exercise 1: Rearrange the Words into a Tamil Sentence
Example:
(சாப்பிடுகிறான் / அவன் / விரைவாக) → அவன் விரைவாக சாப்பிடுகிறான்.
Now try these:
- (நான் / தமிழ் / பேசுகிறேன்)
- (அவள் / பாடல் / அழகாக / பாடுகிறாள்)
- (அவர்கள் / புத்தகம் / வாசிக்கிறார்கள்)

✅ Exercise 2: Translate into Tamil
- “She is singing beautifully.”
- “If you come early, we can watch a movie.”
