Tamil is one of the world’s oldest languages with a rich literary tradition. Poetry has been a vital part of Tamil culture for over 2,000 years! From the Sangam era to modern song lyrics, Tamil poetry has been used to:

🔹 Express love (காதல்), bravery (வீரம்), and spirituality (ஆன்மீகம்).
🔹 Describe nature (இயற்கை) and life’s beauty.
🔹 Communicate deep thoughts in simple words.

2️⃣ Types of Tamil Poetry (தமிழ் கவிதை வகைகள்)

Tamil poetry is diverse! Here are some popular types:

1. Sangam Poetry (சங்க காலக் கவிதைகள்)

📜 Example: Kurunthogai (குறுந்தொகை), Akananuru (அகநானுறு), Purananuru (புறநானுறு)

🔹 Characteristics:

• Focuses on love, war, nature, and human emotions.
• Uses simple yet powerful language.
• Often short but deep in meaning.

✅ Example (Kurunthogai 40)
“தந்தை தந்த கழுதை போல், இவன் உழைக்கிறான்”
(He toils like a donkey given by his father.)

Meaning: A man continues his father’s hard work without questioning it.

2. Venpa (வெண்பா)

📜 Example: Thirukkural (திருக்குறள்)

🔹 Characteristics:

• Short, two-line or four-line poems.
• Each line follows a strict syllable count (Tamil grammar rule).
• Used for wisdom, philosophy, and advice.

✅ Example (Thirukkural 1:1)
“அகர முதல எழுத்தெல்லாம் ஆதி,
பகவன் முதற்றே உலகு.”

(A is the first of all letters;
Likewise, God is the first of the universe.)

3. Modern Free Verse Poetry (புதுக்கவிதை)

📜 Example: Bharathiyar’s poems (பாரதியார் கவிதைகள்)

🔹 Characteristics:

• No strict structure or rhyme—it flows naturally.
• Expresses modern thoughts, emotions, and social ideas.

“நிமிர்ந்த நன்னடை நேர்கொண்ட பார்வை,

3️⃣ Poetic Techniques: Similes & Metaphors (உவமைகள் & உருபமைகள்)

To write beautiful poetry, use similes (உவமைகள்) and metaphors (உருபமைகள்).

🔹 How to use them in poetry?

✅ Example 1: Love Poem (காதல் கவிதை)
“உன் கண்ண்கள் கடலாக தெரிகின்றன,
அதில் மூழ்கி வாழ நினைக்கிறேன்!”

(Your eyes look like an ocean,
I wish to drown and live in them!)

✅ Example 2: Motivational Poem (முன்னேற்றக் கவிதை)
“நீ சூரியனாக எழுந்துவிடு,
உன் ஒளியில் உலகம் ஊற்றெடுக்கும்!”

(Rise like the sun,
Let the world shine in your light!)

4️⃣ Writing Your Own Poem in Tamil

Tamil:
