வணக்கம்! (Vaṇakkam!) Welcome to Lesson 7! In this lesson, we will learn:
How to talk about time in Tamil.
Days of the week and months of the year.
Asking and answering questions about time.
Practical speaking and writing exercises.

Talking About Time (நேரம் பற்றிப் பேசுதல்)

English	Tamil	Pronunciation
What time is it?	மணி எத்தனை?	Maṇi ettaṉai?
It is 10 o’clock	இது பத்து மணி	Itu pattu maṇi
Now	இப்போது	Ippoṭu
Morning	காலையில்	Kālayil
Afternoon	பிற்பகல்	Piṟpakaḷ
Evening	மாலை	Mālai
Night	இரவு	Iravu
Yesterday	நேற்று	Nēṟṟu
Today	இன்று	Iṉṟu
Tomorrow	நாளை	Nāḷai

Example Conversations:

இப்போது மணி எத்தனை? (Ippoṭu maṇi ettaṉai?) → (What time is it now?)
இப்போது இரண்டு மணி. (Ippoṭu iraṇṭu maṇi.) → (It is 2 o’clock now.)

Days of the Week (வார நாட்கள்)

English	Tamil	Pronunciation
Sunday	ஞாயிறு	Ñāyiṟu
Monday	திங்கள்	Tiṅkaḷ
Tuesday	செவ்வாய்	Cevvāy
Wednesday	புதன்	Putaṉ
Thursday	வியாழன்	Viyāḻaṉ
Friday	வெள்ளி	Veḷḷi
Saturday	சனி	Caṉi

Example Sentences:

இன்று புதன் கிழமை. (Iṉṟu putaṉ kiḻamai.) → (Today is Wednesday.)
நாளை வெள்ளிக்கிழமை. (Nāḷai veḷḷi kiḻamai.) → (Tomorrow is Friday.)
நேற்று ஞாயிறு. (Nēṟṟu ñāyiṟu.) → (Yesterday was Sunday.)

Months of the Year (ஆண்டின் மாதங்கள்)

March	மூன்றாம் மாதம்	Mūṉṟām mātam

Example Sentences:

இந்த மாதம் ஏழாம் மாதம். (Iṉta mātam ēḻām mātam.) → (This month is the seventh month – July.)
நான் மூன்றாம் மாதத்தில் பிறந்தேன். (Nāṉ mūṉṟām mātattil piṟantēṉ.) → (I was born in the third month – March.)

Asking About Dates (தேதிகள் பற்றிப் பேசுதல்)

My birthday is on May 5	என் பிறந்த நாள் மே 5	Eṉ piṟanta nāḷ Mē 5
When is the festival?	விழா எப்போது?	Viḻā eppoṭu?
The festival is on August 15	விழா ஆகஸ்ட் 15ம் தேதி	Viḻā Ākast 15m tētī

Talking About the Future & Past (நேரக்கட்டமைப்பு)

English	Tamil	Pronunciation
I will go tomorrow	நான் நாளை போவேன்	Nāṉ nāḷai pōvēṉ
I went yesterday	நான் நேற்றுப் போனேன்	Nāṉ nēṟṟup pōṉēṉ
The function was last week	விழா கடந்த வாரம் நடந்தது	Viḻā kaṭanta vāram naṭantatu
The meeting is next week	கூட்டம் அடுத்த வாரம்	Kūṭṭam aṭutta vāram

Practice Conversations (பயிற்சி உரையாடல்கள்)

நீங்கள் பிறந்த தேதி என்ன? (Nīṅkaḷ piṟanta tētī eṉṉa?) → (What is your birth date?)
நான் ஏழாம் மாதம் 10ம் தேதி பிறந்தேன். (Nāṉ ēḻām mātam 10m tētī piṟantēṉ.) → (I was born on the 10th of the 7th month – July 10.)

விழா எந்த மாதத்தில்? (Viḻā enta mātattil?) → (In which month is the festival?)
விழா நான்காம் மாதம். (Viḻā nāṉkām mātam.) → (The festival is in the 4th month – April.)
