In this lesson, we will learn:
How to ask for directions in Tamil.
How to give directions using simple and clear Tamil words.
Common phrases used in different situations.
Example conversations with practical exercises.

Asking for Directions (திசை கேட்பது)

When you are lost or need to find a place, you can ask:

• “_____ எங்கே இருக்கிறது?” (_____ eṅkē irukkiṟatu?) → “Where is _____?”
• “_____ செல்வதற்கு எந்த வழி?” (_____ celvataṟku enta vaḻi?) → “Which way to go to _____?”
• “_____ எப்படிச் செல்லலாம்?” (_____ eppaṭi cellalām?) → “How can I go to _____?”
• “நான் _____ செல்ல உதவ முடியுமா?” (Nāṉ _____ cella utava muḍiyumā?) → “Can you help me reach _____?”

Examples of Asking for Directions

Exercise: Try asking for directions to:

1. The post office
2. The nearest temple
3. The school

Basic Direction Words (திசை சொற்கள்)

When someone asks for directions, you need to use clear and simple Tamil words:

Using Direction Words in Sentences

Exercise: Try translating these:

1. Go straight and turn left.
2. The temple is behind the hospital.
3. The shop is on the right side of the street.

Giving Detailed Directions (வழி கூறுவது)

When giving directions, use clear step-by-step instructions.

Simple Example:
“நேராக செல்லுங்கள், அப்புறம் இடப்புறம் திரும்புங்கள்.”
(“Nērāka celluṅkaḷ, appuṟam iṭappuṟam tirumbuṅkaḷ.”)
Go straight, then turn left.

Detailed Example:
“நேராக போங்கள். முதல் சாலை கடந்து வலப்புறம் திரும்புங்கள். அங்கிருந்து இரண்டு கட்டுகளில் உங்கள் இடம் இருக்கும்.”
(“Nērāka pōṅkaḷ. Mutal cālai kaṭantu valappuṟam tirumbuṅkaḷ. Aṅkiruntu iraṇṭu kaṭṭukaḷil uṅkaḷ iṭam irukkum.”)
Go straight. Cross the first street and turn right. Your place will be two buildings ahead.

Giving Directions in a Conversation

Person 1: “பேருந்து நிறுத்தம் எங்கே இருக்கிறது?” (Pēruntu niṟuttam eṅkē irukkiṟatu?)
Person 2: “நேராக சென்று இடப்புறம் திரும்புங்கள். நீங்கள் பெரிய கட்டடம் காண்பீர்கள். அதன் பக்கத்தில் பேருந்து நிறுத்தம் இருக்கும்.” (Nērāka ceṉṟu iṭappuṟam tirumbuṅkaḷ. Nīṅkaḷ periya kaṭṭaṭam kāṇpīrkaḷ. Ataṉ pakkattil pēruntu niṟuttam irukkum.)

Exercise: Try giving directions to:

1. A friend looking for the library.
2. A stranger asking for the train station.
3. Someone looking for a hotel.
