Tragic Car Crash Claims Life of Khyree Jackson
Minnesota Vikings Rookie Khyree Jackson Killed in Car Crash Alongside Two Others in Maryland
Minnesota Vikings rookie cornerback Khyree Jackson was tragically killed Saturday morning in a car crash in Prince George’s County, Maryland. The accident also claimed the lives of Jackson’s high school teammates, Isaiah Hazel and Anthony Lytton Jr., according to Maryland State Police.
Jackson, 24, was a front passenger in a Dodge Charger that was part of a three-car collision. The Vikings released a statement expressing their devastation: “We are devastated by the news of Khyree Jackson’s death following an overnight car accident. Our thoughts are with Khyree’s family, friends, teammates, and coaches.”
Jackson was selected by the Vikings in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. His journey to the NFL was marked by resilience, having played at Alabama and Oregon. He quickly endeared himself to teammates and coaches with his contagious energy and engaging personality.
Vikings General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah said, “As we got to know Khyree throughout the pre-draft process, it was clear the goals he wanted to accomplish both professionally and personally. His story was one of resilience.”
The car crash occurred when the Charger, driven by Hazel, was struck by a silver Infiniti attempting to change lanes at a high rate of speed. The Charger then went off the road, hitting multiple tree stumps. Hazel and Jackson died at the scene, while Lytton was pronounced dead at the hospital. Investigators believe alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the crash.
Head Coach Kevin O’Connell expressed his sorrow, stating, “Khyree brought a contagious energy to our facility and our team. In our short time together, it was evident Khyree was going to develop into a tremendous professional football player.”
Jackson’s path to the NFL included playing at Alabama and Oregon, where he earned All-Pac-12 honors. His death is a significant loss to the Vikings and the broader football community.
The NFL also expressed their condolences: “The NFL family is deeply saddened and devastated by the passing of Vikings rookie Khyree Jackson. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family, loved ones, and everybody involved in this tragic accident.”
